I Can’t Drink Out of a Flask

September 17th, 2005

I just can’t pull it off.

This past week I ended up watching the latest episode of The O.C. and there was a sequence where a woman pulls a flask out of her (get this) boot and pulls out this beautiful silver flask with a leather wrap-around and tosses back a few chugs of some kind of hard alcohol. And just as soon as she’d satisfied her inner rebellious side, the flask returned to her hidden place as if it had never emerged in the first place.

And I just kept thinking — I am so not the kind of guy who could pull off drinking out of a flask.

Dangerous Ponderings (Or, Yes I’m Stupid)

September 11th, 2005

I’m sure you’re just like me.

You’ve just finished one of those retro-sodas in the retro-bottles that make you buy the sodas in the first place cause, “Hey look there’s some of those old 50’s looking retro-bottles how great would it be to drink soda out of those things?”

…And you look at the empty bottle and you look at your ring finger and the hole in the top of the soda bottle and you pause for a moment.

In your head you’re thinking about the fact that your finger may not easily fit through the top of that glass bottle but if you wet your finger you’re sure it could go all the way into that bottle, but if you did it and your finger got stuck you would look like the stupidest person on the face of the Earth.

To Join The Family of Dots

September 4th, 2005

It’s not that I don’t love my own family. It’s just that the Family of Dots has just really got it goin’ on.

In this History of this country there have been extremely rich families who have profited from ingenious products or smart business decisions. There was William Randolph Hearst, the newspaper maven who built his small ideas into a huge empire. There was the Rockefeller family, who made billions from oil. There was the Ford family, a true car family if there ever was one. Today, there are many who make much from a variety of items, but the most intriguing is the Family of Dots.

The Darker Side of Toothpicks

August 16th, 2005

The story is always the same.

After a meal of some kind, usually involving chicken or pulled pork or stringy vegetables — whether in your home or out at a restaurant, you feel the need to pick up a toothpick and begin your work. Flicking and picking and pulling and bending and jamming and grabbing and scratching and scraping.

The sucking sounds and the visuals are bad enough — but not not worse than the thought that enters my head… That you are picking food that you ate over the last hour, out of your teeth, then consuming the tiny pieces you find (like a treasure hunter) in a dance that some have called (yes, I know this is so insane of them to say) “unsanitary.”

Words For Your Enjoyment: Attention Whores

July 22nd, 2005

Aaah, Friday.

Is it strange that after so many Fridays over the course of our lives, this Friday is just as exciting as all the rest? Is it weird that while every other single item in our lives that repeats over and over again (another cookie, a birthday, lunchtime, the dentist, et al) gets old and boring and before long we can’t bear to experience it any longer — Friday continues to be just as exciting every single time?

It’s sort of like “Words For Your Enjoyment” — fresh, exciting, filled with 94% of all those extra vitamins and minerals you look for in starting off your weekend… And this week, is of course, no different.
