An Island of Words

June 26th, 2005

Hitting stands right about now is the July edition of Wired Magazine — and within it, yet another piece by yours truly.

This month, my piece is titled Island of Lost Souls and looks at Michael Bay’s upcoming “clones on the run” flick The Island and how, for good or for bad, a lot of the themes and elements in the film feel as though we’ve seen them before. That, these elements have been, for all intents and purposes cloned from other movies to make his.

I compare The Island to movies like THX 1138, Logan’s Run, The Truman Show and The Matrix and interview the man on what he thinks about those movies and sci-fi in general.

Words, California-Style (Or, Airplane Mold)

June 18th, 2005

It’s good to be back in Cali.

Much like Conan feels when he comes back from a week broadcasting in Vegas, or much like The Today Show after a week on the French Riveria, I can finally feel their pain. There is fatigue and lunacy and a bit of the “I feel like the food I ate on the plane” disease.

I’d like to share a harrowing experience which I had on an American Airlines flight today from Boston’s Logan Airport to the San Francisco Airport. (Yes, American Airlines is also the sponsor of that wonderful American Airlines Ticket Challenge Program.) Since they no longer serve food on planes (yes, it’s simply ludicrous) — they at least are caring enough to charge you three bucks for a box of crap, er, snacks.

The Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes Factor

May 23rd, 2005

Did you happen to catch Oprah today?

Tom Cruise (42) showed up to talk about War of the Worlds which doesn’t open until the end of June, but spent most of the time acting like a total lunatic jumping on the couch and kneeling on the floor and laughing and smiling and getting all googly-eyed over his girlfriend of one to two months, Dawson’s Creek’s Katie Holmes (26).

It has convinced me that every single thing Cruise is doing right now is all a means to an end. All in an attempt to hit Box Office Gold this summer. All to try and rise above those who are now making more money in the movies than he is.
