Colorful Words

February 16th, 2006

Apparently, today is the day everything I’ve ever written hits the stands.

Such is also the case for the March/April edition of the ever-so-quirky mental_floss magazine. This month it features a 10-pager by me entitled Scatterbrained: Colors. In it, I write about everything from yellow journalism to white noise to the history of crayons that were removed from your favorite 64-pack and the color “maroon-ed” (movies about being stranded on a desert island). You can find it at your favorite newsstand or local bookstore.

So get it or do what you normally do which involves eating a muffin while perusing the magazine and then putting it back on the shelf all oily and crap.

Living With Misnomensentia

August 23rd, 2005

Misnomensentia effects .00001% of Americans.

As defined by a Dictionary that is unavailable to me at the moment (and so why reference the name of said Dictionary if you can’t go out and confirm this fact for yourself) — Misnomensentia is an individual’s ability to consistently mis-remember and mis-name well-known pop-culture artifacts on such a regular basis that it frustrates all those around them.

There are certain things in this world that people should not forget. These include classic books of literature, huge blockbuster movies, real-true Hollywood stars, names of influential politicians, foods that begin with the letter “B” and much much more. You know these things and I know these things, but those with misnomensentia only think they do.

Words For Your Enjoyment: Attention Whores

July 22nd, 2005

Aaah, Friday.

Is it strange that after so many Fridays over the course of our lives, this Friday is just as exciting as all the rest? Is it weird that while every other single item in our lives that repeats over and over again (another cookie, a birthday, lunchtime, the dentist, et al) gets old and boring and before long we can’t bear to experience it any longer — Friday continues to be just as exciting every single time?

It’s sort of like “Words For Your Enjoyment” — fresh, exciting, filled with 94% of all those extra vitamins and minerals you look for in starting off your weekend… And this week, is of course, no different.

If I Were In ‘The Cutting Edge’

July 20th, 2005

There’s a lot of things I’d do differently if I was the womanizing, fast-talking, blue-collar, ex-Olympic hockey player Doug Dorsey (D.B. Sweeney) from The Cutting Edge.

If you aren’t familiar with The Cutting Edge, it was a rousing piece of entertainment about an ex-Olympic hockey player who (after an eye injury) finds that he cannot compete anymore. It’s also about a figure skater named Kate Moseley whose bitchy attitude has cost her every partner she’s ever had. When the two come together through some unlikely circumstances, they find that by working together as figure skating partners they can make anything happen. Even, the dangerous move their coach calls The Pamchenko Twist!

So unrealistic.

Today’s Prognosis on Peace, Out

July 13th, 2005

Peace, Out.

Throughout history the concept of language and words and letters and all the punctuation inbetween has grown, developed and gotten sort of mangled in my own humble opinion. No longer do dictionaries or thesauri actually contain many of the words or phrases being used by “real people” in the “real world.”

And sometimes, I think that’s a good thing.

There were happier, more polite times when people signed letters with phrases like “Sincerely” or “Best Wishes” or “Love” or “Thank you” or “It’s been great conversing with you” or “From” — but these days there is a movement that seeks to destroy the comfortable, common, sensible end-notes at the bottom of letters, e-mails, and blog posts.
