Here’s to you, DVD Jukebox Filler-Upper.
Here’s to the way you blindly purchase two 400 disc Sony DVD jukeboxes, without doing the research. Here’s to the way you envision a world without DVD boxes, freeing those gleaming discs from their dark, enclosed spaces and putting them into…a larger dark enclosed space. Here’s to how you go out and purchase a PC keyboard (blasphemy for a Mac user) so you can connect it to the DVD jukebox so you can type in 800 different DVD titles for the on-screen menu instead of hunting and pecking on a crappy ‘ol remote… Here’s to a nightmare I can’t wake up from.

Everybody loves Disney.
They own the happiest places on Earth, they own the greatest and most conservative cartoon characters ever created, they control their image to the point of excess — and at every turn they do what they can to spread goodwill and happiness and cheer to all their fans.
That’s why this struck me as so funny.
This week, their most recent feel-good athletic teen superstar movie Ice Princess hits DVD and when I saw the design it brought back memories of another very different movie from the early 80’s. That movie, was called Angel and was about a schoolgirl by day who was a very dangerous hooker/vigilante by night. Funny that Disney would amost identically copy the DVD box of the older movie for their Michelle Trachtenberg movie.

My “indecent proposal” would have been a little less indecent.
You’ve seen the movie Indecent Proposal where a richy rich guy played by Robert Redford offers a struggling couple (who wants to build their dream home) a very unique deal. He’ll pay the couple one-milllllllliiioooooon dollars if the woman (played by Demi Moore) will spend one night with him. Well, she talks it over with her husband (played by Woody Harrelson) and they agree that it’s just one night and in the end, isn’t it worth it for their dreams to come true?

I am the coolest guy you know.
That’s because there’s no one you know in this world who actually has seven hundred and thirty DVDs. That’s because all of my seven hundred and thirty DVDs are cataloged, alphabetized, kept in pristine condition, and hardly ever watched.
But that does not matter in the least, because I am the coolest guy you know.
Sometimes, in conversation, I try to insert in this little tidbit of information if not to simply justify to myself why I visit Best Buy or Tower Video every Tuesday so I can pick up the latest DVD offerings. I try to say something like, “Oh, I’m sorry your mother passed away last month but before she left this world did you happen to tell her that I have seven hundred and thirty DVDs?”

The inner-reasoning usually goes a little something like this:
“I think I should buy Garfield on DVD. I know the reviews were horrible and the movie supposedly sucked but look at all those great extra features! A gag reel! Trailers! A commentary by the visual effects assistant and the janitor who cleaned up after the editing team! Sure, the movie probably sucks, but where else can I watch the Special Nickelodeon Special about the Making-Of the movie!? I’ll get Resident Evil: Apocalypse next week. And Mean Girls, the week after. This Garfield DVD is something that I must have.”
Movies have finally taken a back-seat to extra-special DVD features.
