C(h) - Good question. I'm told that just like Desmond this week went into the past and talked about being on the helicopter and on a ship in the middle of the Ocean...

...when the Oceanic 6 return to the past, they TOO tell their stories of the crash and the airplane. That's what makes them known. But whether or not the public can confirm this (cause it hasn't happened yet) is still something I haven't gotten 411 on. But, imagine if you and a bunch of people got rescued in the Ocean and said you were on a plane crash, the news would still report you as the "survivors" from a plane crash. Even if they couldn't prove what you said was true.

It's potentially why, and I'm paraphrasing again, Hurley has gone crazy in the past -- no one believes he went through what he said. Same for Jack, whose life has fallen a bit apart. And Sayid? He's going after the people who KNOW it's true but refuse to admit to it, and doing away with them.

holy moly! Okay--I am running over and sharing this with my hubby right now. He has a kazillion theories and can't decide which one is the "real one."

BTW, if the flash forwards are really the "past" how come the rest of the world recognizes them as the Oceanic 6 that survived the plane crash? The plane crash wouldn't have happened, no?
