Today’s Brief Question About Life Maybe Possibly Being A Highway And My Thoughts On Not Wanting To Be Riding It All Night Long
August 3rd, 2007
Sure, life may be a highway.
But honestly? Even if life was a highway, would you really want to be riding it all night long? I mean, sure it’s a metaphor so to speak, but isn’t that metaphor basically saying that life is a looooooong long road and that it goes on forever and might as well just ride it without stopping, even throughout the entire night without ever taking a break? Not even to shack up in a motel or anything?
You just don’t live life that way, people. You just don’t.

I hope there’s at least a rest area.

As an immature teenager when that song was hot, we switched out the word “life” and used “your momma” instead. I think even today, that switch makes more sense in context to your entry, Paul.

Alejna - Not according to the guy who coined the phrase, which is why I’m totally against riding a highway (i.e. life) all night long.
Jerry - You are a wise man.

At the risk of sounding completely clueless (a risk I apparently take a LOT) I really don’t get the metaphor. I think the composer just thought that it would sound like a cool thing to say and really didn’t put a lot of thought or research when he penned the words.
I was about to break it down and point out all the inconsistencies, but that would just take too much space here so I’m going to spare you.
In short, yes, life may be like a highway at times, but I get really sleepy driving at night and I’d eventually fall asleep behind the wheel and you know, all kinds of bad things can happen when fall asleep driving.

Thanks for letting me know what happened over on Jacquie’s blog. Have it be known, I still read you on my Google feeds.
I snorted my coffee today when I read the first few sentences.
If it really is a highway, too, you’d end up on the side of “life” every couple of hours, bleary eyed while peeing on your shoes and having to drip dry. This would not be a fun life.

Well, really, wouldn’t it depend on WHICH highway it is?

I agree … life may be a highway, but it’s also a roadtrip. Lots of stops, adventures and even detours.
I too don’t want to be riding it all night long … a freakin’ break here and there is MUCH appreciated!! ~JP

Emma - Snorting coffee has always been my goal for visitors to this site. Also, milk nose spraying. So you’re in good company.
Erin - Good point. If it’s the 405 or the 10 here in Southern California, I’m totally out.
Deb - My point exactly.
