Facts About Ireland*

May 3rd, 2007

  • In Ireland, the Irish don’t call Bailey’s Irish Creme “Bailey’s Irish Creme.” they call it “Bailey’s Me Creme.”
  • Those rainbows that lead you to those pots of gold? This is where they mine, smelt and manufacture those pots of gold (gold not included).
  • Ireland is green and mossy, containing more moss per square foot than any other piece of land in the entire World. Ireland’s moss is also extremely soft, and is sometimes used to stuff bean bag chairs instead of white plastic orbs.
  • Before the English/Irish conflicts of the 60’s and 70’s, Ireland used to be referred to (in Irish-only circles) as “Irishland.” That was changed to “Ingreland” as a way to make fun of the “Engresh” as the Irish referred to the Brits as. To this day, elder Irish settlers still call the Brits, the Engresh.
  • The word “Ireland,” while not permitted to be used in a game of Scrabble — is actually still placed (and not challenged) more than 400,000 times a year.

I understand Skittles is dropping its “Taste the Rainbow” ads because Ireland filed a copyright infringement suit. Of course over there, Skittles are called Wee Bits and its fabled rainbow origins make it the national sweet.

Jerry - I heard that about the lawsuit. I also heard that Scotland sued Fruit of the Loom underwear because they say that the “man dressed up as a huge bunch of grapes” is a classic character from their midget-tales.
