An Excerpt From My New Period Play, “Shot Through The Heart in The Year 1878″

April 24th, 2007

One man stands menacingly over another, who grasps his chest in pain.

Man #1: “Good god, man. I’ve been shot!”
Man #2: “Through the heart, ol’ chap.”
Man #1: “As God is my witness, you sir are to blame!”
Man #2: “Oh, is that so.”
Man #1: “Tis indeed so, sir. You have nothing but hatred to hurl forth.”
Man #2: “So what are you trying to say, then? I embrace hate?”
Man #1: “Tis correct! And you give love, a bad name.”
Man #2: “Unfortunate you think such is true. But I’ve played my part.”
Man #1: “If by that you mean you’ve played my game, then I concur.”
Man #2: “You’re losing an awful lot of blood.”
Man #1: “As I’ve been shot through the heart.”
Man #2: “Oh, is that so.”
Man #1: “Tis indeed so, sir.”

Paul are you trying to say when passion’s a prison you can’t break free?

Jerry - I think Man #2 would probably say that after being arrested for shooting Man #1 through the heart and being convicted by a jury of his peers.

Truly, there is no one to save him. The damage is done.

Woman #1: “Tis all my fault, I fear. I have nails of a sanguine crimson, and I am a young master’s aspiration…”

Was your very first kiss your first kiss goodbye? It had to be to write this. You’re a strange bird, Pauly.

Hey…I think I’ve read part of this …have you released it somewhere with cast names? I think man 1 was called Don Juan…no …Don Bon Jovi???

Apologies - Actually, it was released last year in a soft-bound book of plays called “Plays Inspired By Rock Songs, Volume 2.” But I never gave names to the characters, although Don Juan Bon Jovi isn’t bad.
