I’m with Esther’s analysis for using Mandy. I can’t tell you how many times the host/hostess have butchered my name - somehow Jody comes out Debbie - go figure that one - or Judy or Joey. Finally I resorted to using someone else’s last name - Ellis - because it sounds like it could either be a first or last name and I haven’t has any issues.

For me - Pauly would be reserved for private moments versus public use. It sounds very affectionate. I have a cousin Douglas - I call him Douglas. His friends call him Doug and his wife calls him Dougy.

It all depends on your perspective - Amanda perhaps uses Mandy becasuse the wait staff can’t spell and then they mangle her name and gee who hasn’t heard the Barry Manilow song (even if you’re totally embarassed by it) at least they don’t screw up your name if you must leave it.

I agree wth you that Mandy is not suitable for Amanda! She needs a powerful name like… Victoria or even Elizabeth (both queens you see.)

Granted this coming from a girl who uses the pen name Lala.

Don’t be a name nazi - let her call herself whatever she wants. Mandy rhymes with many things with positive connotations: candy, handy, dandy, randy.

I’m going to assume that she used it either to avoid unwanted attention, or because the staff at Hugo’s butchered “Amanda” one time. When I make reservations, I often use the name of someone else in my party, because maitre d’s often have problems with my first name, not to mention my last name. Although…Esther Kustanowitz…Amanda Foreman…they’re not quite the same challenge, are they?
