I Am Now Worth $122.76
May 18th, 2006

I came across the above “book for sale” listing on the Amazon.com page for The Lost Blogs.
More interesting than the fact that someone who I had recently signed a copy of my new book for was trying to nab so much money for it, was in fact the mystery of who it was. See, as I’ve only signed books for contest winners and recent attendees at the Santa Monica signing, the list of those with a $122.76 valued copy of The Lost Blogs is fairly limited.
Let the Sherlock Holmesian quest to find the culprit begin…now!

it was SO not me pauly. i’d at LEAST charge $300 for it.

That is too funny. But…your autograph is only worth $122.76?

Sarcomical - Thank you. Thank you very much.
Hilary - Honestly, I don’t think it’s even worth $122.76. But you know what, it’s all good.

Pauly you’re worth more than that! C’mon - for my own dance moves you know I wouldn’t take less than……
um, I don’t know what I just said, I’m gonna hit the submit button now….

Are you incredibly honored or hugely indignant? Considering most people’s autograph isn’t worth the paper it’s written on, I would choose honored if I were you!

Why 122.76? That seems like a fairly random number - why not something like 125.00 even?

It wasn’t me…I sware!! I’m still reading mine.
Comment by Jacquie — May 18, 2006 @ 12:38 pm
(why didn’t I think of that???)
Just kiddin!
Comment by Jacquie — May 18, 2006 @ 12:39 pm
PS… did you send any books to NJ??? That’d be my first guess. THe guy (or gal) doesn’t have a very good rating so my guess is it’s a scam!
Hey, I’m pretty good at this. Can I be Watson?
Comment by Jacquie — May 18, 2006 @ 12:42 pm
I hate to break it to you Paul, but it’s worth $122.76 only IF it sells for $122.76.
By the way, I love your blog.

OMG! That’s…tacky! Yet flattering! Yet Tacky! Yet Flattering! This is a predicament for Dr. Sue, I think! The amazing “advice columnist for writers.”
It’s not mine, btw. Mine has my name in it.
So it’s imminently trackable anyhow. I wonder if you oughta sign books with some sort of customized message, always.
Comment by C(h)ristine — May 18, 2006 @ 1:39 pm
Well, whoever it is doesn’t have much of a seller’s rating from their customers, now does s/he?
Comment by Kevin — May 18, 2006 @ 1:44 pm
C(h) - That’s the thing… If it’s a book with just my name, it means they picked it up from a bookstore where I just signed stock one day. Otherwise, I sign every book with a random message…
Comment by Pauly D — May 18, 2006 @ 1:52 pm
Yes, it was me. But I also added: from the Library of Abraham Lincoln, certified genuine by the Library of Congress.
Comment by Neil — May 18, 2006 @ 3:04 pm
Perhaps it was the copy with risque photos of you tucked into the jacket?
Comment by sandra — May 18, 2006 @ 3:05 pm
It wasn’t me. I love the book more than my own family.
Comment by Rabbit — May 18, 2006 @ 3:24 pm
Sandra - I told you never to mention that.
Comment by Pauly D — May 18, 2006 @ 4:28 pm
Wait a second… I can get $122.76 for my signed copy?
Thanks for the heads-up Pauly!

who says you can’t put a price on sentimental value.

I just bought a hundred of your books on Amazon and a Sharpie, could you send me a pic of your signature?

don’t spend it all in one place, unless it’s the grocery store.
Comment by dgm — May 18, 2006 @ 9:06 pm
What ever happened to $122.99?
Comment by Syd — May 19, 2006 @ 8:42 am
Ah–if it’s just one of the “stock” autographed copies…well, how flattering!
Those “booksellers” do it all the time, I think–pick up signed copies and then turn them around. I’ve got a signed copy of Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami (which I bought at auction)…I can only assume that at one point it was a “stock” copy.
Comment by C(h)ristine — May 19, 2006 @ 3:52 pm
It was definitely not me, I sleep with my signed copy under the pillow so that I can feel closer to you, Paul.
(Ok, maybe that’s not entirely true, but I definitely didn’t put the book up for sale. That would be crazy!)
