What are the chances? I was up in Santa Barbara today and for the first time in who knows how many days/weeks/months/years, I saw a person walking down the street wearing a true blue (gray actually) top hat! Not a doorman or something in front of some fancier than me hotel. I feel bad enough for those guys. This was a (supposedly) regular person. And weirder than that — it was a woman wearing it! I think maybe she was going for a goth-meets-intelligentsia look, though I can’t really be sure. Weirdest still that I should then come home to read this very posting on your blog. The sunchronicity is mindblowing.

Reports are coming in from all over the place. I already got e-mails from Las Vegas, Rhode Island and Olympia, Washington of people who ALSO saw folks in top hats last night.

It’s like - are people wearing top hats if you don’t write a post about top hats? I don’t know - but now that there’s a post, they’re everywhere.

I saw a guy wearing a top hat this morning! He was standing in front of Target ringing a bell asking for donations for a charity. Definitely an if you write it they will come scenario!

It’s like that Seinfeld episode when suddenly everyone is eating candy bars and cookies with a fork and knife. Some things are just instantly trendy. Like top hats.

Also, is “seventhly” a word? (Or “ninethly,” “fourthly” and “tenthly,” for that matter.) Sorry—I know it’s the weekend, but my copy editor instinct is still on hyperalert (also not a word). But maybe those are just words for your enjoyment.
