Freakin-Silly Putty

July 19th, 2004

Silly Putty ain’t that silly.

I think back to the time I was a kid and amazed at the fact that I could roll this ball of crap up in a sphere and bounce it off the ground. It never bounced nearly as high as those super-balls but it at least bounced a couple of times and how cool that I could make it into a ball and watch it sort-of bounce.

And then, to take that ball ‘o crap and flatten it out and spread it over a newspaper article and when I pulled it up, be left with a backwards copy of the newspaper text! WOW. Now all I need to do is find a mirror so I can read the obituraries or the second half of the third panel of the latest Garfield cartoon.

Silly Putty is freakin’ silly.

They’re still making the stuff today and unless they come with microchips built in that cause the ball-shaped putty to bounce higher and tell you the weather, and unless the copying portion of the silly putty goo can actually upload it to a server or make multiple non-backwards copies, I’m wondering just what kids are finding interesting about the putty in today’s day and age. Are people even buying the stuff anymore?

I have no idea.

they’ve expanded the silly putty goofiness to include putty that smells, changes color, and is full of glitter to keep the kiddies interested.

http://www.puttyworld.com/ has a whole range of colors of the stuff.

Smacking silly putty with a hammer is very cool too…

My wife still buys the stuff all the time. Whips it out when we goto a restaurant and are waiting. I guess I’m not amazed by it as much as she is, but they are making all kinds of weird colors now. I haven’t tried doing the newspaper copying with the wacked out colors yet. Weekend project.

Sadly, Silly Putty does not work with the Sunday Comics now. They use anti-silly putty ink. Hella lame! You can use it to make a pig nose and it will stick to your face. Don’t try making a unicorn horn because it begins to drop and look like a particular male body part.
