Although it is not a daily food, Japanese people eat blowfish as a delicacy, especially in winter. It requires a license to cook a blowfish in Japan, so you can count on the chef and be safe eating it.
It is a bit expensive in eastern Japan (JPY 5,000 or 6,000 per person) but much cheaper in western Japan (JPY 2,000 or so), so I think it is a specialty of wester Japan including Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Pref.
Actually, it is of less flavor and it does not go with rice and that’s why I think so.

I just don’t get it- why would someone willingly eat something that has the potential of killing them? I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the guy had tried eating raw chicken. Extreme thrillseekers can sure be idiots!
